A devastating earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale has claimed the lives of nine people in the Himalayas near one of Tibet’s holiest cities. The powerful tremor, which struck on Tuesday, was felt across neighbouring Nepal, Bhutan, and India, shaking buildings and leaving communities in distress.
Impact of the Earthquake
The epicentre of the earthquake was located in Tibet, a region known for its seismic activity. The tremor caused significant destruction near the holy city, with reports indicating collapsed structures and widespread panic among residents.
The quake also sent shockwaves across the region, with buildings swaying in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, and tremors felt as far as Bhutan and India’s northeastern states. Initial assessments suggest that hundreds of people may have been displaced, with emergency services working to provide aid and assess the extent of the damage.
Casualties and Rescue Efforts
Chinese authorities confirmed that nine people lost their lives in the disaster. Search and rescue teams have been deployed to affected areas, but access to remote regions has been hindered by landslides and damaged roads caused by the earthquake.
In addition to the fatalities, dozens of injuries have been reported, many of them severe. Hospitals in nearby cities are on high alert, preparing for an influx of patients.
Seismic Activity in the Region
The Himalayas sit atop the tectonic collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian plates, making it one of the most seismically active regions in the world. The earthquake comes just weeks after another tremor in the region, raising concerns about increased seismic activity.
Regional Reactions
Authorities in Nepal, Bhutan, and India have also reported the impact of the earthquake, though no fatalities have been confirmed in these countries as of now. Residents in affected areas described scenes of panic as buildings swayed, and people rushed outdoors to avoid collapsing structures.
In Kathmandu, Nepal, and Thimphu, Bhutan, tremors sparked evacuations in schools, offices, and residential buildings. India’s northeastern states, including Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, also felt the quake, prompting government agencies to issue safety alerts.
International Aid and Support
The international community has expressed solidarity with the affected regions, with offers of assistance pouring in from neighbouring countries and global aid organisations.
China’s emergency management department has deployed additional resources, including search-and-rescue teams, medical aid, and relief supplies. Tibetan monks and local volunteers are also playing a critical role in supporting affected families and ensuring that emergency assistance reaches remote areas.
