The Nigerian National Football Team, popularly known as the “Super Eagles,” was stranded in Libya for over 12 hours under alarming conditions. The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has initiated an investigation after reports emerged that the Nigerian team was diverted to a Libyan airport without prior notice and allegedly denied basic amenities. This incident has raised serious concerns over the treatment of international sports teams and could lead to disciplinary actions as CAF seeks clarity on what transpired.

The Super Eagles faced unexpected adversity on their journey to a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, with their flight redirected to Al Abaq Airport in Libya. CAF described the situation as “disturbing” and has confirmed that both Libyan and Nigerian authorities have been contacted to assess the incident. The Super Eagles and their technical team were left without access to basic facilities, including food and water, and were stranded for over 15 hours. This unexpected detention came after their flight was allegedly redirected without prior notice by the Libyan authorities  .
Captain William Troost-Ekong detailed their experience on social media, expressing frustration and announcing that the team would not continue with the game unless assurances were provided. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has since pulled the team from the upcoming match, citing safety concerns. The Nigerian government has also stepped in, summoning Libya’s chargé d’affaires to discuss the issue and ensure the team’s safe return  .
Broader Implications for International Football
This incident not only disrupts Nigeria’s AFCON campaign but also highlights potential gaps in the handling of international sports teams. CAF President Patrice Motsepe has urged Nigeria to proceed with the match, though the Nigerian Sports Minister emphasized that player safety is paramount. The situation has sparked an outcry among fans and players, with many calling for CAF to impose strict penalties on Libya if any violations are confirmed .
The investigation by CAF’s Disciplinary Board is expected to delve into the Libyan authorities’ conduct and determine whether they breached any protocols. If found culpable, potential sanctions could range from fines to disqualification from the tournament .
