Ngwathe MMC Norma Moloi

In a heartfelt media release dated 16 October 2025, Councillor Norma Moloi, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety in Ngwathe Local Municipality, has extended condolences to families affected by recent road incidents within the municipality. The statement, issued from the municipality’s communications unit in Parys, highlights growing concerns over reckless driving and unsafe road conditions, urging all residents to prioritise safety and respect traffic rules.

Moloi’s message comes at a time when the Free State province, including areas under Ngwathe, faces ongoing challenges with road infrastructure and enforcement. The municipality, which covers towns like Parys, Vredefort, Heilbron, Koppies, and Edenville, has been grappling with issues such as potholes, poor lighting, and lawlessness on the roads, as noted in recent local reports.

This release serves as a call to action, emphasising that every life matters and that collective responsibility can prevent future tragedies.

Condolences and Support for Affected Families

Councillor Moloi expressed deep sympathy for the families impacted by the incidents, particularly those in Tumahole, a township near Parys. “We share in the pain of the bereaved families and send strength to all who have been affected,” the statement reads. These sad events act as a stark reminder of the shared responsibility for road safety among all users, including pedestrians, drivers, and the authorities.

While specific details of the incidents—such as the number of fatalities or exact locations—were not outlined in the release, they underscore a broader pattern of road-related challenges in the region. Recent provincial reports have highlighted similar issues, including a tragic bus crash in Limpopo that claimed 43 lives, though not directly linked to Ngwathe, it reflects the national urgency for better road safety measures.

In Ngwathe, local concerns have included burst pipes affecting access in Parys and Schonkenville as recently as 11 October 2025, which could indirectly impact road conditions during repairs.
Moloi stressed that disregarding road rules, such as speeding, reckless overtaking, and driving under the influence of alcohol, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. This aligns with ongoing calls for stricter enforcement across South Africa, where road fatalities remain a pressing issue.

Municipal Response to Rising Road Safety Concerns

The municipality has acknowledged the community’s worries about the increasing number of reckless driving incidents and unsafe road conditions. As MMC for Community Safety, Moloi assured residents that full investigations are underway for recent cases, with a commitment to prosecuting those responsible. “As we mark Transport Month, we reaffirm our commitment to building safer roads and saving lives,” the release states.
This pledge builds on recent initiatives by Ngwathe Local Municipality to bolster traffic enforcement. On 5 September 2025, Executive Mayor Cllr Victoria De Beer-Mthombeni, alongside Moloi and other officials, unveiled new traffic vehicles to revive the long-dormant Traffic Department, which had been inactive since August 2016. These vehicles are set to enhance daily patrols, joint operations with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Provincial Traffic, and overall law enforcement in high-risk areas.
Furthermore, a 12-month Road Traffic and Law Enforcement Training Programme (NQF Level 4) was launched in 2025, targeting 27 unemployed youth from the Free State. This programme, which closed applications on 1 September 2025, aims to build skills in traffic control and road safety, providing a R2,500 monthly stipend to participants. It represents a step towards addressing youth unemployment while strengthening the municipality’s capacity to enforce road laws.
In addition, the municipality has prioritised restoring street and high-mast lights across all towns to improve visibility and reduce crime and accident risks at night. This ongoing programme, part of the 2025/26 budget of R2.099 billion, ensures regular maintenance to prevent outages and supports safer public spaces for vulnerable groups like children, women, and the elderly.
