Newzroom Afrika Anchor Aldrin Sampear Suspended Amid Road Rage Assault Allegations

Newzroom Afrika

Newzroom Afrika has suspended its prominent news anchor, Aldrin Sampear, following allegations of assault during a road rage incident in Randburg, Johannesburg. The broadcaster announced on Monday that Sampear would take an indefinite leave of absence, pending an internal review of the matter.

In a statement, Newzroom Afrika said: “Newzroom Afrika is aware of an incident involving anchor Aldrin Sampear last week. Sampear will take a break from his broadcast duties with immediate effect, pending an internal review of the matter. Newzroom Afrika takes the allegations very seriously and we will work swiftly to address the concerns raised.”

Incident Overview

The incident occurred on Thursday, 17 April 2025, on Jan Smuts Avenue in Randburg. According to reports, a minor collision took place between Sampear and a 20-year-old university student, Laricia Augusto. Augusto alleges that after she changed lanes in front of Sampear, he reacted aggressively by tailgating and honking at her. When both vehicles stopped, a confrontation ensued, which Augusto recorded on her phone.

In the viral video, Sampear is seen approaching Augusto and questioning her actions, asking, “Why did you give me the middle finger?” Augusto responds by accusing him of physical assault, repeatedly saying, “Stop hitting me,” and threatening to open a police case. She later filed a charge of common assault against Sampear at the Linden Police Station, alleging that he grabbed her arm and struck her during the exchange.

Sampear’s Response

Sampear has categorically denied the assault claims, insisting that the video was manipulated to portray him unfairly. In a written statement, he said, “There was an exchange of words from both parties when we were stationary. I’m horrified to see an edited version of the video because I actually went to my car to go fetch my phone and license to share with the driver. At no point did I assault the driver.” He emphasized that the incident involved only a verbal altercation and no physical contact. Sampear has reported the matter to the police and handed it over to his legal team for further handling.

Police Investigation

Gauteng police have confirmed that a case of common assault has been opened against Sampear, but no arrest has been made as of yet. The Linden Police Station is leading the investigation, which will involve analyzing the video evidence, interviewing witnesses, and collecting additional information to establish the facts. The outcome of this inquiry will determine whether Sampear faces charges or if his claim of video manipulation holds weight.

Public Reaction

The incident has sparked widespread attention and debate on social media platforms. Many users have expressed concern over the allegations, while others have called for a thorough investigation to ascertain the truth. The video of the incident has gone viral, further fueling public interest in the case.

Conclusion

As the investigation continues, Newzroom Afrika has reiterated its commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards and professional conduct among its staff. The broadcaster has assured the public that it will address the matter with the seriousness it deserves.
