By Thobeka Makume
Netflix has officially announced that Kings of Jo’burg will return for a highly anticipated third season, sending fans into a frenzy on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on 1 February 2025.
The streaming giant posted:
“The curse is far from over—power, loyalty, and legacy. The Masire empire reigns supreme. Kings of Jo’burg Season 3. Coming Soon! #NextOnNetflix”
This announcement has ignited excitement among fans eager to delve back into the intricate world of the Masire family. The series masterfully blends elements of crime, drama, and the supernatural, offering a unique portrayal of Johannesburg’s underworld.
A Glimpse into “Kings of Jo’burg”
“Kings of Jo’burg” is a creation of the late Shona Ferguson and is produced by Ferguson Films. The narrative centres on the Masire family, who dominate Johannesburg’s criminal underworld. The series delves into themes of power, loyalty, and legacy, all while intertwining a supernatural family curse that adds depth to the storyline.
The inaugural season premiered on 4 December 2020, introducing viewers to the complex dynamics of the Masire family. The second season, which was released on 27 January 2023, continued to explore these themes, delving deeper into the family’s challenges and the external threats they face.
Anticipation for Season 3
While specific plot details for the upcoming season remain under wraps, the teaser suggests that the Masire family’s saga is far from over. Fans can anticipate further exploration of the family’s power struggles, the enduring impact of their supernatural curse, and the intricate web of loyalty and betrayal that has been a hallmark of the series.
Notable Cast Additions
In June 2024, it was reported that actor Abdul Khoza had joined the cast for the third season. Khoza is known for his compelling performances and is expected to bring a new dynamic to the series. He joins a talented ensemble cast that includes Connie Ferguson, Zolisa Xaluva, and Thapelo Mokoena.
A Tribute to Shona Ferguson
The series holds a special place in the hearts of its creators and fans, especially following the passing of co-creator Shona Ferguson in 2021. His wife and co-creator, Connie Ferguson, has been instrumental in continuing the project’s legacy. In April 2024, she confirmed that production for the third season was underway, sharing a heartfelt message from Netflix: “Welcome to the start of production on Kings of Joburg S3! We’re so happy to be working with you!”
Global Recognition
“Kings of Jo’burg” has not only resonated with South African audiences but has also garnered international acclaim. Its authentic portrayal of Johannesburg’s underworld, combined with supernatural elements, has captivated viewers worldwide. The series stands as a testament to the burgeoning South African television industry and its capacity to produce content that appeals to a global audience.
