The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has recently given its approval for generation licenses to five preferred bidders under the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
This decision was made during NERSA’s meeting on 29th June.
According to NERSA, the five preferred bidders – Doornhoek PV (Pty) Ltd, Boitumelo Solar Power Plant (RF) (Pty) Ltd, Kutlwano Solar Power Plant (RF) (Pty) Ltd, URSA Energy (RF) (Pty) Ltd, and Antlia Energy (RF) (Pty) Ltd – applied for generation licences in accordance with the Electricity Regulation Act, which states that no person can operate a generation facility without obtaining a license from the Energy Regulator.
After thorough analysis, NERSA determined that the applications met all the licensing requirements, and no objections were received. This marks a significant milestone in South Africa’s renewable energy sector, as these preferred bidders will contribute to the country’s plan to increase its generation capacity.
Bid Window 6 of the REIPPPP aimed to procure new generation capacity of 4 200MW, including 3 200 MW of wind energy resources and 1 000 MW of Solar Photovoltaic energy resources. This bid window aligns with the Second Ministerial Determination and demonstrates the government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy in South Africa.
Detailed information regarding the decisions made by NERSA will be made available on their website in due course.
