CAPE TOWN – The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has completed reviewing and approving the tariff applications from all 178 licenced electricity distributors for the 2024/25 financial year. The decision, set to be implemented on 1 July 2024, comes after meticulous consideration of both compliance aspects and public input.

Comprehensive Review in Line with Regulatory Framework

“NERSA processed the 2024/25 distributors’ tariff applications in line with the provisions of the Electricity Regulation Act and also in compliance with the High Court order in the Nelson Mandela Chamber of Business,” the Regulator stated on Friday.

This rigorous process ensures that electricity tariffs are established in a manner that is fair and transparent while adhering to legal standards. The submission procedure is designed to guarantee that each application is scrutinised thoroughly, taking into account the varying costs and operational requirements of different distributors.

Public Participation and Stakeholder Engagement

In a bid to enhance transparency and public involvement, NERSA published all submitted applications on its website. This move invited comments from affected parties, which were then considered during the decision-making process. This critical step underscores NERSA’s commitment to hearing and addressing the concerns of electricity consumers and stakeholders across the country.

Emphasis on Cost of Supply Studies

Distributors were required to submit their tariff applications based on comprehensive cost of supply studies. These studies provide a detailed analysis of the costs incurred in distributing electricity, ensuring that tariffs set are reflective of genuine expenditure and operational needs.

For distributors who had not conducted cost of supply studies, NERSA demanded a detailed breakdown of their electricity distribution-related costs. This requirement ensures that all tariff applications are grounded in sound financial data, promoting fairness and economic sustainability within the sector.
