Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mbuso Mandela, was arrested alongside four other suspects after a hijacked vehicle was recovered at the former president’s Houghton property. While the four suspects have been charged, Mbuso remains a suspect but has not been formally charged.

Arrest Details

The arrests followed the hijacking of an e-hailing driver in Norwood, Johannesburg. The driver was reportedly robbed of R800 in cash and an additional R300 via bank transfer before being released near Boksburg. A tracking device led authorities to the Mandela family property, where the stolen Toyota Corolla and an unlicensed firearm were recovered.

Court Proceedings

The four accused appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, facing charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping, and assault. Their identities have been withheld pending an identity parade scheduled for the weekend. The case has been postponed to January 17 for further investigation and bail applications.

State Prosecutor Tshepo Mahange ka Mzizi stated, “Five people were arrested; only four are before the court. We will not add the fifth suspect until investigations are complete.” The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, added, “The fifth suspect was released due to insufficient evidence linking him to the alleged offenses. The NPA will await finalisation of outstanding investigations before deciding whether they should be prosecuted.”

Mbuso Mandela, 33, has previously faced legal issues, including arrests for possession of an unlicensed firearm and suspected drugs in May 2022. In 2015, he was accused of raping a 15-year-old girl, though the charges were later withdrawn.

Mandela Family Property

The Mandela family home in Houghton, once a residence of the late Nelson Mandela, has been a subject of disputes among family members regarding its use and maintenance. Since Mandela’s passing in 2013, the property has reportedly fallen into disrepair and has been at the center of familial disagreements.
