With the 2024 festive season fast approaching, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is calling on its residents to remain vigilant against the spread of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox). While no cases of mpox have been reported in the metro by October 2024, the municipality is urging the public to take precautions as increased travel during the holidays could heighten the risk of the disease spreading. The municipality, in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Department of Health and private healthcare providers, conducted investigations earlier this year but found no cases within its jurisdiction .
Mpox is a viral disease caused by the Monkeypox virus, which spreads through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces. The disease, which first made headlines in South Africa in early 2024, can be transmitted through physical contact, kissing, sexual activity, or the use of contaminated items such as needles. Mpox symptoms generally include fever, headaches, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that progresses from flat sores to fluid-filled blisters .
Despite the absence of confirmed cases in Nelson Mandela Bay, the municipality is proactively raising awareness. “Knowledge is power,” stated a spokesperson for the municipality. They emphasized the importance of being aware of the symptoms and seeking medical attention if anyone experiences signs of mpox. The municipality has encouraged the public to visit their nearest health facilities if they suspect they may have been exposed to the virus .
The national Department of Health reported an increase in confirmed mpox cases in other parts of South Africa. Since the outbreak began in May 2024, a total of 25 cases have been confirmed, including three deaths . This has raised concerns, particularly as the festive season, marked by increased travel and gatherings, draws near.
To help the public stay informed, the municipality has issued a guide on how to recognize and manage mpox symptoms. It has also emphasized the importance of maintaining hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with others if symptoms appear. The NMBM is committed to working with both public and private health facilities to provide support and information throughout the festive season
