The Department of Correctional Services’ National Commissioner, Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, has confirmed the permanent appointment of 1,003 learners as correctional officers for the fiscal year 2024/25. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to generating employment for the youth and facilitating their entry into the workforce.

These young individuals completed a rigorous 12-month Correctional Services Learnership NQF Level 4 program in 2022 and initially joined as auxiliary support officials on a temporary contract. Their transition to permanent employment, effective from 1 April 2024, marks a significant milestone in their career within the department. The learnership program, known for its comprehensive approach, combines theoretical learning with practical training at various correctional centers, enriching the professional skills of the participants.

The distribution of these appointments across the country illustrates the department’s endeavour to promote balanced workforce development. A notable number of 466 correctional officials have been appointed in the Western Cape, followed by 214 in KwaZulu-Natal and 107 in the Eastern Cape. Other regions, including Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and North West, will each see 75 new officials, while the Free State and the Northern Cape will each welcome 69. Gauteng is set to have 64 new officials, and eight will join the head office, showcasing a nationwide effort to reinforce the correctional service sector.

Commissioner Thobakgale expressed confidence that these appointments would play a pivotal role in enhancing the security framework of correctional facilities across the country. “These appointments will go a long way to strengthen security in correctional centres and ensure more boots on the ground. This serves as a direct response to contributing to a just, peaceful, and safer South Africa through effective and humane incarceration, and the rehabilitation and social reintegration of inmates,” he remarked.
