Pretoria – The National Advisory Council on Innovation, in collaboration with the National Research Foundation (NRF), has announced the availability of two full scholarships for full-time PhD candidates in science, technology, and innovation policy for the 2025 academic year. This initiative aims to foster advanced research and development in South Africa’s scientific community.

Comprehensive Scholarship Coverage

The scholarships will cover all costs associated with the PhD studies, including annual tuition fees, accommodation, transport, and food allowances. This substantial financial support is designed to enable scholars to focus entirely on their research without financial burdens.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for the scholarships:

• Full-Time Student Status: Candidates must be full-time students registered or intending to register for a PhD at any South African public university in 2025.
• Citizenship: Applicants must be South African citizens or hold permanent resident status.
• Academic Qualifications: A relevant master’s degree from a recognised university, whether local or international (with SAQA recognition), is required.
• Academic Performance: A minimum achievement of 65% at the master’s level is mandatory.
• Age Limit: Candidates must be 32 years old or younger in the year of application.
• Independent and Team Work: The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential.
• Employment Status: Applicants should not be in full-time employment while studying.

Application Process

Interested candidates must submit a curriculum vitae (CV) of no more than five pages to Professor Anastassios Pouris at apouris@icon.co.za by 19 July 2024. The CV should include a proposed PhD topic or area of interest.

Selection and Funding Process

Shortlisted candidates will be connected to the NRF Connect system (https://nrfconnect.nrf.ac.za) to formally apply for funding. They will receive an NRF application reference number, and their application will be forwarded to their chosen university for initial screening and review. If the university recommends the application for funding, the NRF will proceed with the funding process.
