Windhoek, Namibia – The Office of the President of Namibia announced early on Sunday that President Hage Geingob has died at the age of 82. The statement released on social media platform X disclosed that he passed away in the Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek where he was undergoing medical treatment.
The announcement came from His Excellency Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, the Acting President of the Republic of Namibia, who expressed profound sorrow over the loss of President Geingob. He stated, “It is with utmost sadness and regret that I inform you that our beloved Dr. Hage G. Geingob, the President of the Republic of Namibia, has passed on today, Sunday, 4 February 2024 at around 00:04.”
Dr. Geingob was with his wife, Madame Monica Geingos, and his children at the time of his passing. Despite the dedicated efforts of his medical team to save his life, his health unfortunately deteriorated leading to his demise.
Acting President Mbumba described President Geingob as a “distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution, and the pillar of the Namibian house.” He urged the Namibian nation to remain calm as the government handles the necessary state arrangements, preparations, and protocols. Updates will be provided in due course.
The Cabinet is set to convene immediately to address the necessary proceedings in light of President Geingob’s passing. Acting President Mbumba called on the nation to keep the family of the late President and all Namibians in their thoughts and prayers.
President Hage Geingob’s contribution to the nation and his role in the country’s history will be remembered. He leaves behind a legacy as a leader who was deeply committed to his nation’s welfare and its democratic principles.
The government and the people of Namibia mourn the loss of their leader, with the Acting President concluding, “May the soul of our beloved Dr. Hage G. Geingob rest in eternal peace.”
