Namibia Declares Mpox Outbreak

Namibia has officially declared an mpox outbreak following the confirmation of its first case in the coastal town of Swakopmund, Erongo Region.

The announcement, made by the Ministry of Health and Social Services on Sunday, 19 October 2025, comes amid heightened global concerns over the spread of the viral disease. Health authorities have activated a national response to contain the situation, emphasising the importance of vigilance and public cooperation.

This development marks Namibia’s entry into the list of African countries dealing with mpox, a disease that has seen a resurgence in the region since 2022. With cases rising across southern Africa, officials are urging residents to report symptoms early and follow preventive measures to avoid further transmission.

Details of the Confirmed Case

The first mpox case was confirmed on Saturday, 18 October 2025, involving a patient who recently travelled outside Namibia within the southern African region. The individual is currently receiving comprehensive treatment in isolation at Swakopmund District Hospital and remains in stable condition. No specific details on the patient’s age, gender, or identity have been released to protect privacy.
According to Health Minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula, the case was identified through routine surveillance and testing. The patient sought medical attention after exhibiting symptoms consistent with mpox, such as fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. Laboratory tests confirmed the infection, prompting immediate isolation and contact tracing efforts.
This marks Namibia’s first recorded mpox case since the global outbreak began in 2022. Prior to this, the country had no confirmed infections, though health authorities had been on alert due to the disease’s spread in neighbouring countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.

Government Response and Declaration of Outbreak

The Ministry of Health and Social Services declared the outbreak on Sunday, activating the national mpox response plan. This includes enhanced surveillance, contact tracing, and public awareness campaigns. Isolation facilities have been prepared, and healthcare workers are being trained to handle potential cases.
Dr Shangula stated that the declaration allows for a coordinated response to prevent wider spread. “We are treating this with the seriousness it deserves. The patient is stable and isolated, and we are tracing all contacts to contain the virus,” he said. The ministry has also engaged with the World Health Organization for technical support and vaccines if needed.
Mpox response teams have been deployed to Swakopmund to monitor the situation closely. Residents in the area are advised to report any symptoms immediately and avoid close contact with others if feeling unwell.

Background on Mpox in Namibia and the Region

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus, part of the same family as smallpox. It spreads through close contact, including skin-to-skin, respiratory droplets, or contaminated objects. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, and a distinctive rash that can last two to four weeks. While often mild, it can be severe in vulnerable groups like children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.
The current global outbreak, declared a public health emergency by the WHO in August 2022, involves a more transmissible clade 1b strain prevalent in central and southern Africa. Over 42,000 cases and 1,100 deaths have been reported worldwide in 2025, with Africa accounting for the majority. Namibia’s case is linked to regional travel, reflecting the virus’s spread across borders.
In southern Africa, countries like South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe have reported cases, with South Africa confirming over 20 since May 2025. Namibia had prepared by stocking vaccines and enhancing border screenings, but this first case tests the system’s readiness.
Health Advice and Preventive Measures
Health officials urge the public to stay informed and take precautions. Key advice includes:

  • Washing hands regularly with soap or using alcohol-based sanitisers.
  • Avoiding close contact with anyone showing mpox symptoms.
  • Not sharing personal items like bedding or clothing with infected individuals.
  • Seeking medical help promptly if symptoms appear, and isolating until cleared.
Vaccines are available for high-risk groups, and the ministry is working to secure more doses. “Early detection and isolation are crucial to stopping the spread,” Shangula emphasised.
Communities are encouraged to avoid stigma, as it could deter people from seeking help. With tourism vital to Swakopmund’s economy, officials assure visitors that risks are low with proper hygiene.
