By Thys Khiba – The African National Congress (ANC) Gauteng provincial secretary Thembinkosi Nciza confirmed that the party regional chairperson Mzwandile Masina will face a disciplinary action for undermining the process of coalition negotiations of the City of Ekurhuleni.

Masina is expected to be charged by the Gauteng ANC for ignoring an order to withdraw a motion of no confidence against Tania Campbell.

This comes after the Ekurhuleni Council backed by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has re-elected Tania Campbell as the executive mayor of the Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality on Tuesday.

This comes after the EFF and the African National Congress (ANC) talks failed to meet each other halfway and agree on their demands.

“Ekurhuleni ANC put a motion of no confidence without the blessing of the Province, we have taken a decision that action must be taken against the Chairperson of Ekurhuleni,” said Nciza.

While addressing the media, Nciza indicated that the PEC task team has been leading discussions on coalitions and they will continue to talk to all parties in the hung municipalities.

“We are not going to be comprised by anybody. People want to act like they don’t know those discussions.

If the motion in Ekurhuleni was done for lack of service delivery, then why is Tania back? Why must other parties vote for us and we don’t vote for them? What is that.”

The party provincial chairperson Panyaza Lesufi told media that the PEC said that Masina has brought the ANC into disrepute. Nciza is expected to convene the PWC and conclude the hearing action.

“The PEC mandated us to brief the national leadership, we did get a mandate from the national officials to conclude these matters. All regions attended the special PEC meeting and we tabled the options given by National Officials,” said Lesufi.

Speaking about their meeting with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president Floyd Shivambu and Secretary General Marshall Dlamini, Lesufi said there were compromises from both sides.

Immediately after their meeting with the opposition party, the ANC PEC was updated by the provincial chairperson and secretary about their agreement with the EFF.

“We went to the Special PEC again and agreement was tabled. The PEC guided us and when we concluded Council had started,” said Lesufi.

He predicted that what will take place in 2024 might have an impact on the governing party.

Responding to what has happened in the region, the EFF president Julius Malema accused Masina of being a destructive leader and a spoilt brat by allegedly sabotaging the EFF and ANC.

Malema indicated that the night before the council extraordinary meeting, the ANC leaders Fikile Mbalula, Panyaza Lesufi and TK Nciza agreed with the EFF on the issue of taking over Ekurhuleni mayoral position.
