Opinion by Kamohelo Teele – Young people need practical solutions because the issue here is structural unemployment and poverty. The rest are secondary. I am not being negative though.
1. Come up with activities and programmes to help them.
At Municipal level it’s high time youth is prioritized. It’s also difficult for me to say because I don’t know the type of Municipalities inherited as far as finances are concerned, I am referring to budget allocations and constraints and all of that.
Municipality should do simple things. People are Not asking for BIG things. Even big words of English and empty promises will not assist them.
1. Buy car wash equipments.
2. Buy containers for them to sell.
3. Drawing equipment for those in arts.
4. Soccer kits and equipments for youth.
5. Teach them to register NPOs.
6. Bring NYDA, Seda and Private sector to your communities and assist youth with funding.
7. NSFSAS application for students (I know this one you did).
8. Buy equipments for guys to run internet cafes
8. Those selling Kota must be supported with equipment as well.
9. Revive Wednesday schools sports in your area of Municipal jurisdiction.
10. Nails equipments and salon equipments for those wanting to start their businesses.
11. This one I am not sure
(Remove Somalians tuckshops) through rigorous and peaceful campaigns. The people of Hielbron did it, local tuckshops are now in the hands of black businesses.
12. We need cleaning campaigns for di Kasi di be clean kaofela.
13. TVET College funding
Municipality can assist in allocating funding for Engeneering students (tuition only). There must be a budget for that. R200 000 can pay a tuition of 100 students. It’s possible, doable only if you have a Mayor who is willing.
Youth Development Officers should do more research, there are many online opportunities. Spend your time in the field, on the grounds rather than in the Municipal chambers, ask for local radio stations to give you weekly slots to update youth on available opportunities.
There must be more activities to reduce the state of hopelessness. In 5 years you can assist as many people as possible.
Note: I am not interested in working for any mucipality!!!!!
