Murder of Kirsten Kluyts
Bafana Mahungela, the primary suspect in the murder of Kirsten Kluyts, has been denied bail by the Alexandra Magistrates court due to concerns about his potential danger to society.
Kluyts, who was found dead at George Lea Park in Sandton after failing to complete a running event on October 29th, has led to a joint investigation featuring police, a private investigator, and a private security company. The investigation led to the arrest of 21-year-old Mahungela last month, who was tied to the crime scene through CCTV footage.
Mahungela claimed that he happened upon Kluyts’ body while walking through George Lea Park. However, authorities found him wearing a T-shirt belonging to the victim in the CCTV footage, leading to charges of rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and premeditated murder.
Despite denying charges of rape and murder, Mahungela was denied bail and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
