Mamelodi Sundowns

By Sello Masilo

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the summit of the Betway Premiership following a gritty 2-1 victory over Royal AM at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. Goals from Sphelele Mkhulise and Khuliso Mudau helped the reigning champions maintain their perfect start to the season, while Royal AM’s first loss in five matches ended their unbeaten streak, although they are still in search of their first win of the season.

Sundowns were determined to match Orlando Pirates, who had temporarily claimed the top spot the day before with a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United. The pressure to keep pace was evident from the start as Sundowns came out aggressively, with Peter Shalulile going close within the opening minute. The early onslaught paid off when Mkhulise pounced on a defensive mistake by Royal AM’s Sbangani Zulu to calmly slot home in the sixth minute  .

Despite relentless attacks from Sundowns, Royal AM’s defence remained resilient throughout much of the first half, limiting further damage. However, Sundowns’ goalkeeper Ronwen Williams had to make a crucial save just before half-time, keeping out a long-range effort from the visitors .

The second half saw Royal AM come out stronger, forcing Williams into action again with a header from a free kick, but Sundowns quickly regained control. The defending champions continued to apply pressure, creating multiple chances, only to be denied by some last-ditch defending from the Royal AM backline. Siyabonga Mabena and Lucas Ribeiro both came close, with the latter almost scoring before a heroic goal-line clearance by Thabo Matlaba  .

The persistence of the Sundowns attack finally paid off five minutes from time when Mudau capitalised on a loose ball inside the box, burying his shot past Royal AM’s keeper, Xolani Ngcobo, to make it 2-0. In a tense finish, Royal AM pulled one back in stoppage time as Zulu redeemed himself by scoring from a corner  .

This victory marked Sundowns’ fifth consecutive win, keeping them at the top of the Premiership table, while Royal AM remains winless after five matches. Sundowns will now look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their upcoming clash against Polokwane City  .
