Tragedy in the Early Hours
The incident unfolded at around 2:30 am in Suncity A, KwaMhlanga. According to police reports, two constables—who were said to be in a romantic relationship—were at the centre of the tragic events.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed that officers responded to a complaint about a shooting. On arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of the 69-year-old woman, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
“At the crime scene, police also found the body of the male constable who had also succumbed to gunshot wounds,” Mdhluli said.

Victims Identified and Condition of Female Constable
The elderly woman and the male constable were certified dead at the scene by paramedics. The female constable, who had also been shot, was rushed to hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Mdhluli said two firearms, believed to be state-issued service pistols, and several cartridges were recovered at the crime scene. These are being subjected to forensic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

IPID Called In
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been roped in to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident. Their involvement is standard procedure whenever a police officer is implicated in a shooting, ensuring independent oversight and transparency.
At this stage, the motive behind the shooting remains unknown, and no arrests have been made.
“Police cannot rule out possibilities that the incident could be related to domestic violence,” Mdhluli added.

Leadership Response
Acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, described the tragedy as “disheartening” and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. He also urged law enforcement officers to seek professional help when grappling with personal or relationship challenges.
“As the police service, we have wellness and support programmes available. Officers must use these resources when faced with personal difficulties to prevent such heartbreaking incidents,” Mkhwanazi said.
