By Thys Khiba – Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Tactical Response Team and Tracking Team also known as Amaberete have arrested an undocumented foreign national in possession of explosives in Sabie, Mpumalanga on Thursday, 06 April.
“Mpumalanga Tactical Response Team and Mpumalanga Tracking Team operationalise the information gathered which resulted in a big fish nabbed,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.
The 31-year–old Zimbabwean national was tracked down and apprehended whilst walking on the street.
According to Mohlala, the suspect was found in possession of ten Superpower blasting cartridges, ten green Cap Fuses and 50 meter Detonating Cord.
Police indicated further investigations will be considered to establish if the Zimbabwean national is not part of the Mpumalanga ATM bombing syndicates.
“The suspect was arrested for unlawful possession of explosives and further investigation will be conducted to establish if the suspect is not part of the ATM bombing syndicates in the province.”
In order to verify whether the suspect is legal or illegal in South Africa, the Home Affairs department will also be brought on board.
Amongst other relevant law enforcement agencies, police cannot rule out that the contravention of Immigration Act charge could be added.
The suspect is expected to appear in Sabie Magistrate Court on Tuesday 11 April 2023.
