Mozambique’s Constitutional Council
By Thabo Mosia
Mozambique’s Constitutional Council has officially confirmed Daniel Chapo, the ruling FRELIMO party’s candidate, as the winner of the October presidential election, securing 65% of the vote. This announcement has intensified nationwide protests led by opposition supporters who allege electoral fraud.
The opposition, particularly the PODEMOS party led by Venâncio Mondlane, disputes the election results, claiming the process was rigged. Mondlane, who garnered 24% of the vote, has called for continued demonstrations, including a nationwide shutdown, to challenge the legitimacy of Chapo’s presidency.
Since the election, Mozambique has witnessed significant unrest, with reports indicating that over 100 people have died in clashes between protesters and security forces. The international community, including Western observers, has expressed concerns over the fairness of the electoral process and the subsequent violence.
The ongoing protests have disrupted economic activities, affecting operations of foreign companies and leading to the temporary closure of key trade corridors. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has indicated that Mozambique’s economic growth for 2024 may be lower than the previously forecasted 4.3% due to the unrest and the impact of Cyclone Chido.
