Motorists in Johannesburg Warned to Drive Safely Amid Wet Conditions

Johannesburg Emergency Services

The Johannesburg Emergency Services has urged motorists in the city to exercise caution while driving as wet conditions persist. The South African Weather Service has issued an alert of isolated showers and thundershowers expected in most parts of Gauteng on Sunday. Joburg EMS is warning residents in low-lying areas to be vigilant as flash floods may occur in their communities. City’s Emergency Services Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says people should avoid crossing streams. “Motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving, and avoid crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges. Our residents in our low-lying areas are urged to avoid crossing river streams while conducting daily activities.”

Weather Alert: Persistent Rainfall and Thunderstorms

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 Impact-Based Warning for severe thunderstorms across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo. These storms are anticipated to bring heavy downpours, leading to wet and slippery road conditions.

Safety Measures for Motorists

In light of the adverse weather conditions, motorists are advised to:

• Reduce Speed: Wet roads can be slippery, increasing the risk of accidents. Driving at a lower speed allows for better control of the vehicle.
• Maintain Safe Following Distance: Keeping a greater distance between vehicles provides ample time to react to sudden stops or emergencies.
• Use Headlights: Ensure headlights are turned on, even during daylight hours, to improve visibility.
• Avoid Flooded Areas: Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or low-lying bridges, as water levels can be deceptive and dangerous.

Impact on Low-Lying Areas

Residents in low-lying regions are particularly vulnerable to flash floods. Communities are urged to remain vigilant and avoid crossing river streams during daily activities. Emergency services have reported several flash floods across low-lying areas in Johannesburg following heavy downpours. While no major incidents have been reported, emergency services remain on high alert.

Emergency Services on High Alert

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has also urged motorists to exercise extreme caution due to continuous rainfall affecting the city. Reports indicate hazardous driving conditions and significantly reduced visibility. Motorists are advised to avoid areas with localized flooding and not to attempt driving through floodwaters of unknown depth.

Earlier this month, heavy rains wreaked havoc in several areas of Gauteng, including Randpark Ridge, Newlands, Strubens Valley, and Jukskei Park. Incidents included wall collapses and flooded bridges, highlighting the dangers posed by severe weather conditions.

Emergency Contact Information

Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring weather updates from credible sources. For life-threatening emergencies, contact the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Services Call Centre at (011) 375-5911.

By adhering to these safety measures and staying informed, motorists and residents can navigate the challenges posed by the current weather conditions in Johannesburg.
