The ActionSA Political Party has taken a bold step by filing a motion of no confidence against Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda.

The motion is set to be tabled at the upcoming council meeting on 31st August. The party’s primary concern revolves around allegations of corruption that suggest Gwamanda defrauded vulnerable individuals through a funeral scheme.

In a statement, Action SA’s Johannesburg Caucus Leader, Funzi Ngobeni, emphasized the urgency for Gwamanda to respond to these grave accusations.

Ngobeni had previously called on the Mayor to address the matter in his recent State of the City Address. Unfortunately, it seems that Gwamanda did not take this demand seriously, giving ActionSA no choice but to file the motion.

The accusations against Gwamanda gained widespread attention following an exposé by Carte Blanche, which shed light on the alleged fraudulent activities related to the funeral scheme.

Additionally, serious doubts have been raised regarding Gwamanda’s claimed academic qualifications. Yet, despite the gravity of these allegations, the Mayor has failed to address them openly to the council or the residents of Johannesburg.

ActionSA spokesperson Khomotjo Mashala has further added fuel to the fire by accusing the ANC-EFF coalition of protecting Gwamanda from media inquiries.

Mashala also highlighted an incident in which Gwamanda was allegedly sidelined by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi during the recent gas explosion in the Johannesburg CBD. This, Mashala argues, demonstrates a pattern of shielding and protecting Gwamanda.

Furthermore, Mashala voiced concerns about Gwamanda’s refusal to take action against his own executive members despite serious allegations against them.

One such example involves Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Nomiya Mnisi, who has been accused of directing a city entity to pay the ANC Youth League close to a million rand. Despite these damning allegations, Mnisi remains in office without any repercussions.
