The 2024 Touch Rugby Junior Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) is off to an inspiring start, thanks to a generous R160,000 donation from MotiMoves, the free mentorship and business intervention initiative led by South African business mogul, Zunaid Moti. This sponsorship has provided much-needed financial support to ensure that young athletes from across the country can participate in the prestigious event without being hindered by financial constraints.
As the youth of South Africa prepares to showcase their skills in this popular variant of rugby, the impact of this donation is already being felt by players, coaches, and organisers alike. In addition to the monetary contribution, MotiMoves has provided 125 backpacks for the participating players, 13 jerseys for the coaching staff, and hosted a sit-down dinner for the Gauteng Touch Association’s members, creating a strong sense of community and unity ahead of the tournament’s kickoff on Friday, 27 September in Cape Town.
Empowering the Next Generation of Athletes
Zunaid Moti’s vision for the future of South African sports is firmly rooted in his belief that financial barriers should not prevent talented young people from pursuing their dreams. “Rugby is one of South Africa’s greatest sports, and I am so excited to see young players develop a love for this game so early on,” said Moti in a statement. “It’s important that we nurture their passion and allow our youth to get onto the field without any financial concerns holding them back.”
The players, aged between 13 and 19, stand to benefit tremendously from MotiMoves’ intervention, as the sponsorship covers costs that would otherwise prevent some participants from competing in the IPT. As Moti emphasised, this support will allow the players to focus on their development, both in sport and in life.
Building More Than Just Athletes
Sport is not merely about competition. For these young players, participating in the IPT represents an opportunity to learn life lessons that will guide them beyond the rugby field. Zunaid Moti believes that events like the Touch Rugby Junior IPT offer invaluable experiences for South African youth. “Sporting events like this give children the chance to push themselves, have fun, and experience what they’re capable of,” Moti said. “It’s about letting them discover their potential and keeping them out of trouble while they learn positive values that will keep them on the right path in the future, both in sport and in life.”
The emphasis on personal growth aligns perfectly with MotiMoves’ mission to mentor and empower individuals. While the initiative predominantly focuses on business development, its investment in sport highlights its broader commitment to fostering success and nurturing potential in all areas of life.
A Much-Needed Boost for Touch Rugby
Touch rugby, as an affiliate sport to the South African Rugby Union, is highly dependent on external funding to ensure it can thrive. Unlike more established sports, touch rugby operates on a pay-to-play basis, meaning that players must cover their own expenses to participate in events like the IPT. For many families, this can be a prohibitive factor, preventing young talent from taking part.
Chris Brownbill, Chairperson of the Gauteng Touch Association, expressed his gratitude for MotiMoves’ involvement, noting that this year’s tournament had a significant number of players requiring financial assistance. “We were very fortunate that Zunaid Moti and MotiMoves came forward to assist and cover all these players’ expenses,” Brownbill said. “Ultimately, our goal is to make sure that every player who is selected can play, and we thank Zunaid and MotiMoves for paying it forward and giving these players the opportunity of a lifetime.”
A History of Supporting South African Sport
MotiMoves is no stranger to the world of sports sponsorship. Over the years, the initiative has supported a wide range of South African and international athletes and sporting causes. Previous beneficiaries include the South African Women’s Hockey Team, Emly George—a rising tennis star from Zimbabwe and African Junior Champion—Darren Thomas, a wheelchair powerlifter, and Norman Eckman, a paraplegic dart player who competed on the international stage.
The sponsorship of the Touch Rugby Junior IPT continues this tradition of fostering talent, helping young athletes reach their full potential while providing them with the resources they need to succeed.
