By Thys Khiba – The Matlosana Local Municipality confirmed that they have managed to accommodate at least 25 families who are affected by flooding in Orkney near Klerksdorp, at North West.
The Vaal River water level has increased and more than 86 people need accommodation as many have lost their householdsgoods due to the flooding in Orkney Vaal River.
The Fire and Rescue Assistant Director, Mpato indicated the water level is still rising faster and areas like Schoonspruit bridge and the number 10 Shaft is also a great concern.
Mpato also indicated that if the water continues to rise, the road between Orkney and Leeudoringstad could be closed.
The City of Matlosana’s Fire and Rescue team confirmed that they are monitoring the situation and have evacuated 18 families during the weekend. No loss of lives has been reported.
The nearby community has been helpful by providing buckets, food, water, toilets and other necessities.
Members of the community who wish to donate food and blankets or volunteer help also can visit the Orkney Community Centre in Milton Avenue.
During the week, the Executive Mayor James Tsolela visited the area and families who were affected due to floods.
Tsolela was accompanied by the Single Whip of Council Khaya Ndicede, Assistant Director for Fire and Rescue, Mpato.
Meanwhile, residents in the Fezile Dabi District Municipality were alerted about Vaal Dam after heavy rainfall causing the dam to exceed its maximum capacity. The dam currently has 12 gates opened.
