In a dramatic turn of events during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party Member of Parliament (MP) Visvin Reddy was expelled from the National Assembly after vocally criticising the government’s handling of South Africa’s ongoing water crisis. The MK Party has since labelled Reddy’s removal as “unjust,” asserting that his actions were in the public’s interest.

Parliamentary Showdown Over Water Crisis

The session in question centred on a report by the Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation, addressing petitions from residents in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, who have been grappling with erratic water supply. Chairperson Leonard Basson highlighted several contributing factors to the water shortages, including rapid population growth, infrastructure failures, and issues exacerbated by load-shedding and cable theft.

Taking the podium, Reddy did not mince words in his critique of Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina, accusing her of being “unfit for office” and “out of touch” with the realities faced by communities without water. He further condemned the Government of National Unity (GNU) parties for prioritising positions over public service, labelling the situation as a “damn disgrace.”

Reddy’s impassioned speech culminated in chants of “Pemmy must go” and “GNU must go,” leading Deputy Speaker Annelie Lotriet to deem his conduct out of order. Despite requests to withdraw his remarks, Reddy remained defiant, resulting in his expulsion from the chamber.

MK Party’s Stance on Reddy’s Expulsion

In the aftermath, the MK Party released a statement through spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela, condemning Reddy’s removal as an attempt to silence legitimate criticism. The party asserted that Reddy was voicing the frustrations of countless South Africans affected by the water crisis and that his expulsion reflects a disregard for democratic principles.

Historical Context and Party Dynamics

This incident is not isolated but part of a series of internal and external challenges faced by the MK Party. In April 2024, the party removed Youth League President Bonginkosi Khanyile in what it described as a “strategic redeployment,” aiming to bolster efforts to address pressing national issues such as land expropriation and unemployment.

Additionally, the party has experienced leadership changes, including the brief removal and subsequent reinstatement of Secretary-General Arthur Zwane, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen internal structures.
