Pretoria — International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Ronald Lamola, has committed his department to harnessing the power of economic diplomacy as a tool to address the deep-seated issues of poverty, inequality, and unemployment that continue to challenge South Africa. This approach, Lamola argues, will not only enhance South Africa’s global standing but also bring tangible benefits to its citizens.

Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Minister Lamola stressed the importance of making international relations relevant and accessible to the everyday lives of South Africans. “I look forward to working with all of you in the seventh administration to make international relations more accessible to every South African. International relations is not abstract, it affects us in our everyday lives,” he said.

Lamola outlined the consistent goal of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) in striving towards a more just and equitable African continent and world. He reiterated that DIRCO’s work is pivotal in realising this vision, and assured the public that there would be continuity in foreign policy, in alignment with the Government of National Unity’s (GNU) vision.

“DIRCO’s work is crucial in realising this grand vision every day. We have reassured everyone that there will be continuity in foreign policy, aligned with the Government of National Unity’s (GNU) vision,” Lamola affirmed.

The Minister also highlighted the unified efforts of the parties in the GNU to address the nation’s most pressing challenges. “President Cyril Ramaphosa indicated in his inauguration speech that the parties have committed to pursuing a foreign policy based on human rights, solidarity, and peace. They will also promote multilateralism for a fairer, more equal, just, and compassionate world,” Lamola added.

In line with this commitment, Lamola encouraged the DIRCO team to seize learning and development opportunities to enhance their professional growth, ensuring that South Africa remains a robust player on the international stage.

South Africa’s Firm Stance on Global Issues

Minister Lamola did not shy away from addressing other pressing international issues. He strongly condemned the recent attack on a school-turned-shelter for displaced Palestinians in Gaza, which resulted in the tragic deaths of over 100 people, including women and children. The school was targeted by the Israeli military, which claimed it was a “command and control centre” for Hamas terrorists, a claim that South Africa has challenged due to the lack of evidence provided.

“South Africa is gravely concerned at the continuous targeting of schools, hospitals, medical infrastructure, and holy sites that are a source of shelter and protection for the civilian population who bear the brunt of the inhumane attacks in the Gaza Strip,” the Minister stated.

Lamola reiterated that South Africa maintains there is no legal, ethical, or moral justification for the bombardment of non-combatants and the destruction of civilian sites. He called on the international community to take decisive action against what he termed a deliberate attempt to derail ceasefire negotiations and the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.

“South Africa once again calls on the United Nations to deploy a rapid protection force to protect the civilian population from further bombardment,” Lamola urged.

Support for Global Peace and Stability

In addition to the situation in Gaza, Minister Lamola welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, a peace effort facilitated by Angola. The Minister expressed hope that this agreement would pave the way for lasting peace in the region.

On Venezuela, Lamola confirmed that South Africa is closely monitoring developments following the recent elections, where President Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner. The Minister reaffirmed South Africa’s support for the Venezuelan people’s right to self-determination, free from external interference.
