Minister in the Presidency responsible for Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, announced on Friday that technical experts supported by the Resource Mobilisation Fund (RMF) will be stationed at various power stations across the country from Monday, 5 June 2023.

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, is set to lead outreach initiative this week in the Northern Cape, focusing on innovative partnerships and energy solutions. The programme, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, aims to bring together governmental spheres and the business sector to combat load shedding and ensure energy security.

According to an official statement from the Ministry, the outreach’s primary goal is to foster collaboration to realise the objectives of the Energy Action Plan (EAP). “The programme seeks to forge partnerships between all spheres of government and organised business/industrialists to achieve the Energy Action Plan’s [EAP] target of ending load shedding and creating energy security,” the statement highlighted. Emphasis is also placed on localised energy solutions that promise not only to uphold local economies but also to safeguard jobs and livelihoods.

The Minister’s schedule includes a significant milestone as he, alongside Premier Zamani Saul and supported by provincial and local government officials, will witness the operational commencement of Scatec ASA’s hybrid solar and energy battery storage facilities. These facilities mark a significant stride in renewable energy provision in South Africa. “On Thursday, the Minister…will be part of marking the reaching of commercial operation of one of the largest hybrid solar and energy battery storage facilities, Scatec ASA,” the Ministry shared. The Kenhardt plants in the Northern Cape, with their 540 MW solar capacity and 225MW/1140MWh battery storage, will now begin supplying the national grid with 150 MW of dispatchable power.

This venture is a practical demonstration of the EAP’s pillars of encouraging private investments in the country’s energy sector and accelerating the procurement from renewable sources. The blend of solar power and battery storage in such magnitude presents a forward-thinking approach to resolve the persistent energy deficit while keeping in sync with global trends towards cleaner energy sources.

As the program wraps up on Friday, Minister Ramokgopa will engage with business leaders in Upington, fostering dialogue on furthering energy security and sustainability at the local level. This initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to not only address the immediate challenges of load shedding but also to lay down a resilient, sustainable energy infrastructure that will serve the nation for years to come.

During his visit at Kusile Power Station, Minister @Kgosientsho_R “The problem of load shedding will be resolved. Ultimately, the problem of electricity in this country will also be resolved,” #YourSafetyOurConcern #LeaveNoOneBehind
