Cape Town, South Africa – In a compelling address at the African Energy Week (AEW) held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Minister of Energy and Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, emphasised the critical role of African unity in harnessing the continent’s vast renewable energy resources to drive global innovation and sustainable development.

Africa’s Renewable Energy Potential

Minister Ramokgopa highlighted Africa’s unparalleled potential in renewable energy, citing the continent’s abundant natural resources as a foundation for a sustainable and prosperous future.

• Solar Energy: With vast expanses receiving year-round sunlight, particularly in the Sahara and Sub-Saharan regions, Africa boasts some of the highest solar irradiation levels globally. This positions the continent to significantly expand solar energy initiatives, providing power to off-grid and rural communities.
• Wind Energy: Regions such as Egypt’s coastal areas and the inland zones of Kenya and Ethiopia possess strong wind corridors, offering immense potential for clean electricity generation. Developing wind energy infrastructure not only promotes sustainability but also creates employment opportunities in turbine manufacturing and maintenance.
• Hydropower: Major rivers like the Congo, Nile, and Zambezi present significant untapped hydropower potential. Sustainably managed hydropower projects can deliver baseload power essential for industrialisation and rural electrification, thereby reducing energy costs for industries.

Advocating for African Energy Priorities on the Global Stage

As South Africa assumes the G20 presidency later this year, Minister Ramokgopa affirmed the nation’s commitment to championing Africa’s energy priorities on a global platform. He stated, “South Africa will advocate for energy policies that bridge the development gap, recognising the continent’s need for clean energy and affordable access.” This leadership role aims to address Africa’s unique energy challenges and support a resilient, inclusive future.

Call for Unity and Innovation

The Minister underscored the necessity of unity, innovation, and collective resolve among African nations to harness the continent’s energy resources effectively. He remarked, “Africa’s path forward lies in seizing control of our energy destiny. Our continent’s vast resources, rich potential, and resilience make us capable not just of fuelling our homes and industries but of powering a new African century.”

Commitment to Sustainable Growth

Minister Ramokgopa emphasised that solutions to Africa’s energy challenges must accelerate sustainable growth while considering the unique economic contexts of African countries. He reiterated South Africa’s dedication to promoting an African energy agenda that is bold, just, and rooted in African values, aiming to light up the continent with power and the promise of progress, sovereignty, and sustainable prosperity for every African citizen.
