Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa
During a media briefing in Pretoria on Tuesday, Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa discussed the current state of Eskom’s generation system and its plans for the future. He emphasized that while Eskom is working to improve its generation capabilities, citizens should still expect some level of load shedding.
Ramokgopa explained that many of Eskom’s units remain unreliable due to legacy issues and underinvestment. The entity is conducting routine maintenance to address these issues and improve the reliability of the grid. He assured the public that efforts are being made to minimize the impact of load shedding, with Eskom aiming to limit it to no more than Stage 4 levels.
The Minister highlighted the work done during the festive season to address fleet issues and prepare for increased demand. He also noted improvements in reducing repeat failures and increasing the buffer for potential units failing, which could reduce the need for load shedding in the future.
Ramokgopa provided updates on the status of specific power stations, such as Koeberg and Kusile, and emphasized the importance of extending the license of the country’s only nuclear power station.
Additionally, the Minister called for public input on the draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2023, which aims to ensure the security of electricity supply while considering environmental factors and total cost of supply. He encouraged citizens to make written submissions and participate in oral representations to ensure their views are considered in the final policy plan.
