EPWP
Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Barbara Creecy, has taken immediate action in light of recent complaints concerning the non-payment of stipends to participants of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) under her department’s jurisdiction.
On Monday, the Minister openly addressed the situation and raised concerns over the welfare of the affected individuals, who are primarily employed within various municipalities.
“The investigation will include engaging the EPWP participants to verify the accuracy of the payment information (copy of ID, banking details) and timesheets. The verification will assist in developing proactive measures to address stipend payment delays and produce a verified list of unpaid participants,” noted Creecy in her public statement.
The detailed probe initiated by Creecy is expected to run exhaustively for two weeks, wherein senior management will look into the discrepancies in payment processes. Subsequent to this verification schedule, a report will be presented to the Minister.
EPWP participants facing this dilemma have been instructed by the Minister to present themselves to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment’s local government support officials for comprehensive assistance throughout the verification phase.
Creecy’s decisive approach signifies the department’s commitment to rectifying the plight of those affected. “The purpose of the exercise over the next two weeks is to identify those who have worked but have not been paid so that we can speed up the processing of payments. It is not acceptable that some participants, who have given their time and energy to the department, have still not been paid for their services,” she adamantly emphasized.
Substantial employment opportunities have been generated by the DFFE, with 51,048 jobs stemming from the cleaning and greening programme which is a part of the EPWP scheme.
