The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, is currently heading a delegation to Tokyo, Japan, to spearhead efforts in establishing a hydrogen economy in South Africa.

This mission aims to showcase the Department of Science and Innovation’s (DSI) work in hydrogen energy and foster collaboration, investment, and innovation to enable large-scale hydrogen deployment in line with South Africa’s Hydrogen Society Roadmap.

The Hydrogen Society Roadmap, launched by the DSI in 2022, serves as a national roadmap to integrate hydrogen-related technologies across diverse sectors of South Africa’s economy.

Its implementation is seen as a vital part of stimulating economic growth and is aligned with the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan.

One of the key objectives of the roadmap is to establish a robust manufacturing sector for hydrogen products and components. The DSI highlighted this outcome as crucial for achieving the roadmap’s goals.

Minister Nzimande and the delegation wasted no time, with their engagements commencing on Monday, 25 September, at the Tokyo GX Week Plenary Session. This event is part of the larger Tokyo GX Week 2023, hosted by Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), Yasutoshi Nishimura.

Tokyo GX Week is focused on accelerating net-zero emissions efforts by promoting the transition from fossil fuel-dependent economic structures to clean energy solutions, fostering economic growth, development, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Furthermore, Minister Nzimande will deliver an address at the 6th Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting, attended by prominent figures in the energy and environment sectors from both the private and public spheres.

Today, the DSI will host a collaborative workshop with the Japan External Trade Organization, bringing together South African and Japanese entities to discuss the development of a large-scale hydrogen demonstration project.

The aim is to explore opportunities for a sustainable and affordable hydrogen and ammonia supply chain.

An expected outcome of the workshop is the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the DSI and METI, facilitating further collaboration in this crucial field.

Recognizing their shared vision of achieving net-zero emissions, both South Africa and Japan have enjoyed a longstanding relationship and common interests in science, technology, and innovation (STI).

Bilateral cooperation in STI has flourished since the signing of the STI agreement in 2003.

The engagements in Tokyo will continue until 27 September, symbolizing both countries’ commitment to advancing the hydrogen economy and sustainable energy solutions.
