Minister Professor Blade Nzimande

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, has strongly refuted allegations made by the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) that he used funds from his department’s entities to support the South African Communist Party (SACP).

The allegations, relating to kickbacks from service providers to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), were addressed by the Minister at a media briefing in Pretoria on Monday.

Nzimande emphasized that he has never received personal kickbacks from service providers to NSFAS or any other entities under his department. He described the OUTA report as baseless and a part of a malicious campaign against him.

The Minister also highlighted his track record in fighting corruption at NSFAS and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, mentioning that disciplinary processes have been initiated against employees found guilty of misconduct and that the contracts of direct payment service providers have been terminated.

In addition, Nzimande assured the public that he has no role in determining the allocation of training funds by any of the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), including the Services SETA mentioned in the OUTA report.

He dismissed the leaked recordings and subsequent allegations as part of a campaign meant to undermine and frustrate the decisions of the NSFAS Board, emphasizing that his commitment to clean governance remains unwavering.

The Minister is set to meet with the NSFAS Board to receive updates on various aspects of the organization’s operations and to inform the public of the readiness for the upcoming academic year.

Nzimande concluded by reaffirming his dedication to rooting out corruption and ensuring a smooth start to the 2024 academic year for students in the Post School Education and Training sector.
