The blood, sweat, and tears of South Africa’s men and women in blue were honoured during the official National Police Day celebration in Durban on Monday, 27 January 2025. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu led the event, held at the Kings Park Athletic Stadium, as a platform to recognise the unwavering dedication, courage, and sacrifices of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

“Today, we pause to reflect on your invaluable contributions, to honour your service, and to reaffirm our commitment to supporting and strengthening our police service,” said Minister Mchunu to thousands of officers gathered at the event.

This year’s National Police Day marked a significant milestone, being celebrated under the theme: “Celebrating 30 Years of Policing in Democracy.” The occasion coincides with South Africa’s 30 Years of Freedom and Democracy, a testament to the country’s progress in fostering a police service that truly embodies the spirit of democracy and unity.

Recognising SAPS’ Role in a Democratic South Africa

Minister Mchunu highlighted how SAPS has evolved over the past three decades, transitioning from a history marred by division to a future founded on unity, justice, and human rights.

“We transitioned from a past marked by division to a future founded on unity, justice, and human rights. Throughout the years, SAPS has played a critical role in strengthening democracy, protecting citizens, and ensuring that every South African can live in safety and dignity,” Mchunu noted.

He underscored the critical role of SAPS officers as the shield between law-abiding citizens and those who seek to harm them, adding that their bravery and resilience are the bedrock of South Africa’s safety and security.

“You are the first line of defence in our fight against crime, corruption, and lawlessness. Every day, you put your lives on the line, facing unimaginable dangers to safeguard our communities. Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed. On behalf of the government of the Republic of South Africa and the people you so diligently protect, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you,” he said.

National Police Day: A Time for Reflection and Gratitude

National Police Day, officially recognised by Cabinet in 2005, is an annual observance held on 27 January to acknowledge the dedication of SAPS officers. This year’s celebration brought together police personnel, government officials, and members of the community to reflect on SAPS’ pivotal role in ensuring public safety and security.

SAPS’ Commitment to Combating Crime

While celebrating the achievements of SAPS, Minister Mchunu also addressed the pressing challenges faced by the police force, particularly in the fight against crime. He reiterated the government’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks, rooting out corruption, and restoring public confidence in law enforcement.

“We recognise that policing is not just about enforcement; it is about service. It is about building trust between officers and communities, ensuring that every citizen, regardless of where they live, feels safe, protected, and heard,” Mchunu emphasised.

The Minister stressed that public trust is SAPS’ most significant weapon in eradicating crime. “Our strength lies in the bonds we forge with our communities. The more we work together, the stronger we become in our mission to eradicate crime.”

Investing in the Future of Policing

Mchunu highlighted the importance of continuous investment in training, technology, and community partnerships to enhance SAPS’ effectiveness. He called for a police service that adapts, innovates, and works collaboratively with citizens to maintain safety and order.

“A police service that commands the trust of the people is a police service that can truly make a difference. We must continuously invest in training, technology, and community partnerships to enhance our effectiveness. A police service that adapts, innovates, and works hand in hand with the people is a police service that can truly serve and protect,” he said.

Honouring the Legacy of SAPS Heroes

Minister Mchunu took time to honour fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. At the last annual Police Commemoration Day held in September 2024, SAPS paid tribute to 39 officers who lost their lives between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024.

“These officers were mothers, fathers, siblings, and friends. Their sacrifice reminds us of the immense responsibility borne by those who wear the badge,” Mchunu said.

The South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) also stands as a testament to SAPS’ commitment to supporting the families of fallen heroes. Established in 2010, SAPSET provides financial and resource assistance to the children of officers who died in the line of duty. To date, SAPSET has supported 1,631 children, with 21 having graduated and 155 matriculating. The trust has raised over R17 million to support these initiatives.

Incremental Improvements for SAPS Members

In recognition of the challenges faced by SAPS operational members, the government increased the danger allowance from R400 to R700 in April 2022. While this adjustment marks progress, Mchunu acknowledged the need for further improvements to address the risks and hardships faced by police officers.

The Future of SAPS: Building Trust and Collaboration

Minister Mchunu emphasised that the road ahead for SAPS lies in fostering greater collaboration with communities. He called on citizens to work alongside the police to strengthen safety and security efforts, stressing that a united front is key to overcoming the challenges posed by crime and corruption.

“The trust of the people in the SAPS is the greatest weapon. The more we work together, the stronger we become in our mission to eradicate crime,” Mchunu stated.

SAPS’ Role in Upholding Democracy

As South Africa celebrates 30 years of freedom, SAPS continues to uphold the values of a democratic society. Through their dedication and resilience, SAPS officers have become an integral part of the nation’s progress towards unity, justice, and equality.

Mchunu concluded his address by reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting SAPS in its mission to protect and serve South Africa. “We honour your bravery. We respect your resilience, and we salute your dedication,” he said.
