Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, is spearheading a three-day gathering with kings, queens, and principal traditional leaders from across South Africa. Held in Pretoria, this meeting seeks to foster government cooperation with traditional leadership and follows an earlier meet-and-greet with royalty in August.

Hlabisa, alongside CoGTA Deputy Ministers Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe and Dr Namane Masemola, leads the engagement, accompanied by various ministers, MECs, and senior officials from the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Task Team. The gathering underscores traditional leadership’s essential role in supporting development, promoting peace, and enhancing social cohesion in rural and traditional communities—a priority affirmed by the government under the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act No. 3 of 2019.

This dialogue addresses critical issues, including land reform, rural infrastructure, and socio-economic progress, with discussions informed by progress reports from government departments. The department also announced plans to establish a Forum of South African Majesties, ensuring ongoing communication between traditional leaders and the government on matters of mutual interest and inclusive development .

The current engagements form part of broader efforts by Minister Hlabisa to advance ethical governance and rural transformation. Recently, he advocated for a new Code for Ethical Leadership in Local Government to reinforce accountability, aiming to address issues like corruption and inefficiency in municipalities. This ethical leadership initiative complements the minister’s work with traditional leaders, recognising their influence in driving sustainable development in South Africa’s rural areas.
