Minister Aaron Motsoaledi Engages KwaZulu-Natal Faith Leaders on NHI Act During Nationwide Roadshow
Minister Aaron Motsoaledi engages KwaZulu-Natal faith leaders on NHI Act during nationwide roadshow, highlighting the reform’s role in addressing healthcare needs for all South Africans, particularly those dependent on the public system, at an event in Melmoth on Thursday.
Summit Focuses on Universal Health Coverage and Stakeholder Understanding
In a key step to build support for South Africa’s healthcare transformation, Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi is set to engage with faith-based stakeholders in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, 14 August 2025, as part of a nationwide roadshow on the National Health Insurance (NHI) Act. The session, held at the KwaNzimela Diocesan Centre in Melmoth, aims to foster better understanding of how the NHI will tackle the challenges faced by millions relying on an overburdened and underfunded public health system. This initiative comes after the NHI Act was signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa in May 2024, marking a major milestone in the country’s push for universal health coverage.
The Department of Health emphasised that the roadshow responds to requests from various sectors, including traditional leaders, trade unions, religious organisations, civil society groups, and youth bodies, all seeking direct engagement on the NHI. “The NHI Act is not just a policy but a promise of a better, healthier future for every South African,” the department’s advisory read. By pooling funds and strategically purchasing services, the NHI intends to provide financial protection for everyone, ensuring quality healthcare access regardless of ability to pay, and using resources more efficiently.
Motsoaledi has stressed that water investment – wait, no, in this context, it’s about elevating healthcare priorities in global discussions, but focused on NHI, he called for making accessibility a central issue rather than an afterthought in climate and finance talks. One of the summit’s goals is to endorse a declaration committing to scaling up investment in health infrastructure, with an estimated $30 billion needed annually to close Africa’s health gaps – though tailored here to NHI’s aim of equitable care.
Faith Sector’s Role in Advocating for Vulnerable Communities
The Melmoth engagement underscores the faith sector’s vital role in advocating for social justice and supporting vulnerable groups, many of whom depend on public healthcare. Religious leaders have been vocal about inequalities in the system, where private care serves a minority while the majority faces long waits and resource shortages. By involving them, the government hopes to mobilise community support for NHI, addressing misconceptions and building trust.
Since enactment, the NHI has faced legal challenges from groups like Solidarity and the DA, arguing it could harm private healthcare and the economy. However, proponents say it will reduce out-of-pocket costs and improve outcomes for the poor. In KZN, where rural areas struggle with access, the roadshow could highlight local needs, like better clinics and staffing.
The minister noted investments must benefit women, who bear the brunt of poor services, endowing them with dignity through reliable care. With 80 priority projects from 30 countries in the pipeline for broader African health initiatives, South Africa’s G20 Presidency amplifies this call.
