By Thabo Mosia
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube announced that the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) matric exams concluded successfully, with minimal irregularities reported. Addressing the media on Wednesday, Gwarube highlighted the smooth administration of the exams, which saw over 700,000 learners participating nationwide.
“Despite some challenges, the overall administration of these exams has been successful, with minimal irregularities thanks to the collective efforts of dedicated educators, administrators, and learners themselves,” Gwarube stated.
Challenges Faced During the Examination Period
The examination period was not without its hurdles. In provinces like the Eastern Cape, severe flooding necessitated the rescheduling of exams for hundreds of learners. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) collaborated with local authorities to ensure that affected students could complete their examinations without compromising the integrity of the process.
“While exam writing may be over, the task of marking, standardising, and processing results lies ahead. It is crucial that we remain focused and committed to ensuring the accuracy and integrity of this process,” Gwarube emphasized.
Upcoming Phases: Marking and Results Release
With the examination phase concluded, attention now shifts to marking and standardization. The DBE has established marking centres across the country, staffed by qualified educators to ensure a fair and thorough assessment of all examination scripts. The results are scheduled for release on 13 January 2025.
Commendation for Stakeholders
Minister Gwarube extended her gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the examination process. “The dedication of our educators, the resilience of our learners, and the unwavering support from parents and communities have been instrumental in the success of this year’s matric exams,” she remarked.
Security Measures and Integrity of the Exams
To uphold the integrity of the NSC exams, the DBE implemented stringent security measures. These included secure printing and distribution of exam papers, monitoring of examination centres, and swift responses to any reported irregularities. Such measures were crucial in maintaining the credibility of the matriculation process.
Looking Ahead: Post-Examination Support
As learners await their results, the DBE encourages them to utilize available support services. Counselling and career guidance are accessible to assist students in making informed decisions about their future educational and career paths.
“Our commitment to supporting our learners extends beyond the examination room. We are here to guide them as they transition to the next phase of their lives,” Gwarube assured.
