Sundowns Head Coach Title

By Sello Masilo

Speculation around the coaching situation at Mamelodi Sundowns has intensified after head coach Miguel Cardoso removed any reference to being the club’s head coach from his social media profile.

The move comes amid growing reports that Sundowns have already secured the services of Pitso Mosimane, a development that has sent shockwaves through South African football circles.

While the club has not made an official announcement, the timing of Cardoso’s profile change has fuelled speculation that a coaching transition is imminent.

Junior Khanye: “Pitso Is Already With Sundowns”

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Junior Khanye has added weight to the rumours, claiming that Mosimane is already part of the Sundowns setup.

Speaking on the latest episode of the iDiski Podcast, Khanye suggested that Sundowns’ reported pursuit of Monnapule Saleng is a clear indication that Mosimane is pulling the strings behind the scenes.

“For me, Pitso is already there. The Saleng situation tells you everything you need to know,” Khanye said.

Saleng Move Could Shift the Title Race

Khanye questioned the wisdom of Orlando Pirates potentially allowing Saleng to join their closest rivals while the two teams are still competing at the top of the table.

“You don’t give your enemy a weapon while you are still fighting them,” Khanye warned.
“Saleng is a player who unlocks defences and scores when it matters. Losing him directly strengthens Sundowns.”

According to Khanye, Pirates’ strong position this season has come despite Saleng’s limited contribution, but losing a proven match-winner could still prove costly in the long run.

Why Pitso Changes Everything at Sundowns

Khanye believes Mosimane’s coaching style is perfectly suited to players like Saleng, arguing that Pitso has a proven track record of extracting the best from attacking players with pace and end product.

“Pitso understands these types of players. He knows how to unlock them. If Saleng goes to Sundowns under Pitso, he will function,” he said.

However, Khanye also cautioned that Sundowns’ structured, possession-based style could pose challenges, as not all direct attackers adapt easily to their system — pointing to past examples where big-name signings struggled to fit in.

Money Talks Behind the Scenes

Khanye suggested that financial considerations may have forced Pirates into a difficult position, noting that large transfer fees can sometimes outweigh sporting logic.

“Money talks. Sometimes clubs are forced to sell even when it doesn’t make football sense,” he added.

He further hinted that there may be deeper contractual or internal issues at play, insisting that Pirates would normally do everything possible to avoid strengthening a direct title rival.

Waiting for Official Confirmation

For now, Sundowns remain silent on both Mosimane’s reported signing and Cardoso’s status, but the signs are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

With Cardoso’s social media move, Khanye’s claims, and the Saleng transfer talk all converging, South African football appears to be on the brink of another major shake-up.
