Midvaal Mayor
The Midvaal Local Municipality recently hosted a Youth Summit aimed at bringing government services closer to the people and providing young individuals with opportunities for growth and development. The event was a resounding success, with over 1000 participants from across the 15 wards of the municipality.
The Youth Summit was organized in response to the Buang Batjha (Youth Speak) campaign, which took place from May to June 2023. This campaign saw extensive participation and public engagement across different communities, addressing various societal issues.
The event welcomed a wide range of stakeholders, including government departments, youth agencies, NGOs, private companies, and higher learning institutions. The presence of these stakeholders ensured that the summit was a comprehensive platform for youth empowerment and development.
The Executive Mayor, Alderman Peter Teixeira, warmly welcomed the young participants, acknowledging their determination to shape a brighter future for themselves and the community. He expressed his gratitude to them for their presence and emphasized the importance of their involvement in decision-making processes.
A notable highlight of the summit was the announcement made by SAYouth.mobi, an organization committed to youth empowerment. They pledged to hire over 100 young participants from the summit, offering them various positions, including coding at Early Childhood Development Centres (ECD) and in the field of creative arts. This hiring initiative is an addition to the 291 jobs already provided to young people across the Sedibeng region.
Another organization, Human Capital Learning Solutions, offered all attendees access to three internationally recognized skills development courses for free. This gesture showcases their commitment to equipping young individuals with the necessary skills to succeed in today’s competitive job market.
Furthermore, Just Radio, a radio station based in Midvaal, offered internship opportunities to four aspiring young individuals seeking a career in the media industry. This opportunity will provide them with valuable hands-on experience and exposure to the world of media.
Looking ahead, the Executive Mayor announced that the municipality has plans and initiatives in place for further youth development. These plans will be announced in the coming months, demonstrating the commitment of the Midvaal Local Municipality to supporting young individuals in their pursuit of a better future.
In closing, the municipality expressed its gratitude to all stakeholders and exhibitors who actively participated in empowering the youth during the recent Youth Summit. They also extended a special thank you to the youth of Midvaal for their enthusiastic participation and presence at the summit, highlighting their determination to build a brighter future for themselves and the community.
