Midvaal Local Municipality
By Thabo Mosia
Meyerton, South Africa – The Midvaal Local Municipality has officially opened the newly rehabilitated and upgraded Johan Le Roux Road in Meyerton. The municipality made the announcement on Friday, bringing to conclusion a project that began in February 2024.
Municipal spokesperson Idah Satikhe highlighted that the rehabilitation project, a crucial upgrade for the community, was largely completed this week. Only minor jobs, such as pavement finishing and roadside cleanup, are still ongoing. Over time, Johan Le Roux Road had suffered degradation due to wear and tear, adverse weather conditions, traffic loads, and other environmental factors.
Despite the challenges, Satikhe revealed that the municipality managed to stick to the original six-month timeline and the allocated budget of R20 million.
“The rehabilitation involved a complete overhaul of the road structure, including the removal of the existing pavement and base layers, and replacing them with new materials,” Satikhe confirmed.
One of the vital aspects of this project was its economic importance. “Johan Le Roux Road is a vital economic route for Midvaal, ensuring the movement of goods and services in and out of our region,” Satikhe added.
A notable feature of this rehabilitation effort was the direct involvement of local small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs). “As part of the municipality’s empowerment programme, at least ten SMMEs were hired during the construction to provide various services such as TLB hire, security, paving, site establishment, and drainage,” Satikhe explained.
Beyond the infrastructural improvement, the project also made a positive social impact. Midvaal Mayor Peter Teixeira announced that over 14 residents were given employment opportunities. Additionally, at least 40 individuals received accredited training in essential construction skills such as kerb laying, bricklaying, asphalt, and concrete work.
“Midvaal will continue to invest in infrastructure development, such as roads, to ensure our residents can move around easily and to ensure the smooth movement of goods, which is critical in growing the local economy,” Teixeira mentioned.
