Mexico’s Record Seizure
By Thobeka Makume
Mexico has reported one of its largest-ever methamphetamine busts after authorities seized nearly 42 tonnes of crystal meth during raids on illegal laboratories in the western state of Michoacán . The operation, involving five clandestine production sites, dealt a staggering blow estimated at 1.06 billion pesos (approximately US $55.7 million) to organised crime syndicates .
Drums containing 8,800 litres of chemical precursors were also confiscated, alongside vital equipment used to cook and process illicit drugs . This enforcement action took place amid intensifying pressure from the United States—under former President Donald Trump—to curb the flow of synthetic drugs, especially fentanyl, across the border .
⸻
🚨 The Perfect Storm: Lab Scale and Precision
Experts warn this seizure reflects a broader shift in the structure of Mexican drug labs: fewer in number, but industrial-scale in capacity. Defence Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval noted these labs have grown in size and output over recent years .
This trend aligns with findings in the US Drug Enforcement Administration’s 2025 report, which identifies synthetic drugs—notably methamphetamine and fentanyl—as the primary drivers of overdose deaths . While overall seizure volumes of meth are down, its purity remains extremely high—up to 97%—and the rise in pill-based forms targets broader, recreational markets .
⸻
The China–Mexico–US Drug Pipeline
Many precursor chemicals used in these labs originate from China, which supplies components like ephedrine and other synthetic precursors. The partnership between Mexican cartels and overseas chemical suppliers has been scrutinised in recent investigations by INSIGHT Crime .
One initiative from US Homeland Security Investigations recently intercepted 50 tonnes of such precursors in the Port of Long Beach, bound for the Sinaloa Cartel—highlighting the extensive chemical supply chain underpinning Mexican synthetic drug labs .
⸻
Escalating Internal Demand and Public Health Threat
Contrary to popular belief, synthetic drug use in Mexico is surging domestically. Reports reveal a 416% increase in treatment seekers for stimulant abuse between 2013 and 2023 . Analysts point to crystal meth’s low cost and functionality appeal among factory workers, truck drivers, and young adults—making it Mexico’s drug of choice over fentanyl or heroin .
Despite this rise, Mexico’s health system lacks sufficient evidence‑based and humane treatment options. The informal “anexo” rehab centres often employ harsh methods and remain outside formal regulatory frameworks .
