Metsimaholo Executive Mayor Malindi Expresses Deep Condolences Over Lindiwe Tshongwe’s Passing
By Thabo Mosia
SASOLBURG, Free State – The Metsimaholo Municipality is enveloped in mourning following the passing of its former Executive Mayor, Lindiwe Tshongwe. The news was confirmed by the municipality on Tuesday.
Lindiwe Tshongwe, who also served as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance and Integrated Development Plan (IDP) at the time of her passing, was an influential figure both locally and provincially. She held the position of Free State Provincial Deputy Chairperson for the South African Communist Party (SACP).
Tshongwe’s political journey was marked by her pivotal role in the 2017 local government elections. She was among the SACP leaders who championed the party’s decision to contest the elections independently for the first time, a move prompted by specific conditions in Metsimaholo and the ANC’s failure to engage meaningfully with the SACP on alliance reconfiguration. This decisive step led to Tshongwe’s appointment as the mayor, driven by community encouragement and grievances, including the ANC-led municipality’s dismissal of 320 workers following a strike in 2014.
The Executive Mayor, Clir Jack Malindi, issued a heartfelt statement expressing the community’s grief. “A heavy dark cloud hangs over the Metsimaholo Local Municipality following the sudden and untimely death of the MMC for Finance and Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and former Executive Mayor, Clir Lindiwe Tshongwe,” he said. “On behalf of the municipality, I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.”
“Our beloved ClIr Tshongwe was called to rest this morning, 21 May 2024, after a long illness. News of her passing has undoubtedly sent shock waves throughout the entire Metsimaholo municipal area, as well as the entire Fezile Dabi District. We were still expecting a lot from her in terms of contributing to the development and changing the lives of our communities,” added Cllr Malindi.
At the time of her death, Tshongwe was a Proportional Representation (PR) Councillor for the African National Congress (ANC) in the municipality. “We have lost one of the very committed councillors and a community leader and worker. Her death has deprived us of one of the brightest rising stars who was committed to the development of her community,” said Cllr Malindi.
Clir Tshongwe was highly regarded for her active role in municipal development, particularly in integrated planning. Her contributions to performance reporting and IDP were notably impactful. Clir Malindi commented, “We are in serious devastation as Clir Tshongwe was highly active in the implementation of development in the municipality, more particularly integrated planning. Her astuteness and vigilance will be dearly missed. Our municipality has lost a steadfast, raw, vigilant but committed community activist whose life story is testimony of selfless service to others. Clir Tshongwe devoted her life to serving the community of Metsimaholo, with humility, dedication, and commitment. It’s a huge loss to the council of Metsimaholo and the community of Metsimaholo. She was a very well-respected and dedicated councillor.”
As the community grapples with her loss, Clir Malindi extended his deepest sympathies. “May the family and friends of Clir Tshongwe find solace in the knowledge that we all painfully share their loss. MAY HER BEAUTIFUL SOUL REST IN PEACE,” he concluded.
