Mercedes-Benz
By Thabo Mosia
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced the recall of 54 Mercedes-Benz GLE 167 models due to a potential safety defect that could lead to an unexpected loss of propulsion power, increasing the risk of accidents. This recall affects vehicles produced from 2022 to the present, and Mercedes-Benz South Africa is offering free replacements for affected owners.
What’s the Issue?
The problem originates from the high-voltage starter-alternator processor in the vehicle’s control unit. According to NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba:
“The vehicle’s processor in the control unit of the high-voltage starter generator may experience sporadic overload. Consequently, the system’s monitoring function might incorrectly detect a faulty component in the high-voltage starter alternator. In this scenario, the functions of the high-voltage starter generator could be deactivated, potentially leading to an unexpected loss of propulsion power without warning. This situation could increase the risk of an accident.”
In simpler terms, the processor might overload unpredictably, causing the system to shut down the starter generator. This could result in the vehicle suddenly losing power while driving—a serious safety hazard.
Which Vehicles Are Affected?
The recall targets Mercedes-Benz GLE 167 models manufactured between 2022 and the present. A total of 54 vehicles are affected in South Africa, with some possibly exported to neighboring countries, including:
• Botswana
• Lesotho
• Namibia
• Swaziland (Eswatini)
If you own a GLE 167 from this production period and live in one of these regions, your vehicle might be part of the recall.
What Should Consumers Do?
Mercedes-Benz South Africa is taking action to resolve the issue and has informed the NCC of the problem. Owners of affected vehicles are urged to:
1. Check if your vehicle is impacted: Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer or visit the official website (https://www.mercedes-benz.co.za/) to verify using your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
2. Book an appointment: Schedule a visit with any authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer for a free replacement of the faulty processor. As Ntaba noted, this service will be provided at no extra cost to consumers.
