A Closer Look at Talitha’s Journey
In an exclusive interview with Central News, Talitha shared her experiences from her matric year, reflecting on the challenges and triumphs that defined her path to success.
Q: How did you feel when you saw your results?
“It was a good day! Honestly, I didn’t expect the results I got, but I worked hard and put in all the effort. Throughout the year, things got harder, and at times my results weren’t as strong, but everything came together in the finals. I’m really thankful that the hard work paid off.”
Q: What were your subjects and marks?
“I achieved distinctions in seven subjects:
• Afrikaans: 92%
• English: 89%
• Mathematics: 93%
• Life Orientation: 95%
• Accounting: 96%
• Computer Applications Technology (CAT): 93%
• Physics: 95%.”
Q: How did you balance academics with extracurricular activities?
“I participated in netball, athletics, choir, and guitar, so my schedule was busy. At first, it was overwhelming—I even shed a few tears—but I realised I could use my extracurriculars as a break from studying. Playing netball or practising music helped me relax, and when I went back to my books, I felt refreshed. It was all about finding balance and staying organised.”
Support and Motivation
Talitha credited her family, school, and friends for their unwavering support during her matric year. “The learners and teachers at Welkom Gymnasium were amazing. Their support kept me going, and I always felt encouraged. My family has been my greatest motivators. Seeing their achievements and dedication inspired me to do my best.”
Future Aspirations
As she looks to the future, Talitha is eager to pursue Agricultural Science at the University of Pretoria, one of the universities she applied to alongside North-West University and Stellenbosch University.
“I’ve always been interested in research within the agricultural field. I don’t see myself as a farmer, but I’m passionate about contributing to advancements in this area. It’s such an exciting field, and I’m looking forward to all the opportunities it will bring.”
Despite leaving behind the familiarity of Welkom, Talitha is optimistic about the journey ahead, describing her new chapter as both exciting and challenging.
Advice for Future Matriculants
When asked to share advice for learners preparing for their matric year, Talitha offered practical and heartfelt guidance:
1. Stay Organised: Keep a schedule and stick to it. Time management is crucial.
2. Find Balance: Use extracurricular activities or hobbies to unwind and manage stress.
3. Seek Support: Don’t be afraid to ask for help from teachers, friends, or family.
4. Stay Focused: Remember your goals and stay motivated, even when the going gets tough.
Recognition and Celebration
The Free State Education Department continues to celebrate learners like Talitha, whose achievements reflect the hard work of educators, parents, and communities. Dr Maboya’s commitment to recognising these learners highlights the province’s dedication to fostering academic excellence.
As Talitha prepares to begin her university studies, her story serves as a beacon of inspiration for learners across the country. Her ability to balance academics, extracurricular activities, and personal growth demonstrates the power of determination and resilience.
A Message of Gratitude
In closing, Talitha shared a heartfelt message for those who supported her:
“To everyone at Welkom Gymnasium, thank you for your love and encouragement. You’ve been like a second family to me. To my actual family, thank you for always believing in me and motivating me to achieve my dreams. I wouldn’t be here without you.”
