MEC WILLIAM BULWANE LAUNCHES FESTIVE SEASON ROAd SAFETY CAMPAIGN IN PETRUSBURG

The MEC for Police, Roads and Transport (DPRT), William Bulwane, has officially launched the 2022 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign in Petrusburg on Tuesday, 13 December.

The MEC launched the Festive Season Campaign following the National launch by Minister Fikile Mbalula on last week Thursday under the theme: ” It starts with you”.

The MEC was accompanied by Xhariep District Municipality Mayor Cllr Irene Mehlomakulu.

“The Launch began with a roadblock at the junction of the R48 and N8 Kimberly around 7:00-11:30 in the morning. The number of vehicles stopped and checked are 470, number of cases issued is 80 and there were three (3) illegal immigrants arrested.” said MEC Spokesperson Zama Sigwebela

”The aim of the festive season campaign is to ensure that there is a smooth traffic flow in the province and heightened safety for road users.”

Later the MEC in his address at Ipetleng Secondary School sent his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the accident that occurred on the N1 between Winburg and Verkeerdevlei Toll Plaza were thirteen(13) lives.

Present were the Executive Mayor of Xhariep: Cllr Irene Mehlomakulu, General Moodley from Correctional, Chief Director Traffic: Mr Leeto and church leaders from various denominations.

MEC Bulwane said that road crushes are not only taking lives but also burdening the economy of the province.

The MEC further indicated that the following roads, Hoopstad-Bloemhof Sasolburg-Heilbron and Tweespruit-Excelssior have recently gone out on tender.

The MEC mentioned that the R26 road is under discussion with the Minister and SANRAL with an intend to make it Lesotho Highway. On the R30, the contractor is already on site and work has commenced and fifteen (15) contractors are appointed for the regular maintenance of our roads throughout the province.

MEC urged motorists to keep to be compliance with road laws and take necessary breaks when traveling long journey. The MEC further indicated that is still the departments aim to reduce fatal crashes in the province by five(5) percent.

Stakeholders present included Department of Correctional Services, South African Police Service (SAPS), Road Accident Fund (RAF), ARTO, SAB and different NGO’s.
