Free State Back to School Campaign – MEC Toto Makume
As part of the ongoing Back to School campaign, Free State MEC for Cooperation Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and Human Settlements, Ketso Toto Makume, continued his visits to educational institutions in the Fezile Dabi district today, bringing encouragement and support to learners and educators alike.
In the spotlight for the day’s campaign were two foundational schools: Metsimatle Secondary School and Metsimaholo Primary School in Oranjeville. These visits come on the heels of a similar engagement that took place on January 17 at Hermana Primary School in Ladybrand, marking the initiation of this heartfelt project by the Provincial Government.
The objective of the Back to School campaign is to inspire and motivate both learners and teachers, as well as to acknowledge the successes harvested in the previous academic year. The 2023 achievements of schools across the province have been a focal point of pride within the community.
During the visits, MEC Makume delivered a motivating address, highlighting the unwavering dedication and hard work shown by teachers. He urged educators to persevere in their critical role within society, saying, “Please don’t leave this career because we as a country rely on you to mold our kids and help them shape their future, as we may all know, teaching is the mother of all careers.”
Turning his attention to the learners, he advised them to concentrate on their studies and to avoid detrimental activities such as drugs, gangsterism, and inappropriate relationships. He emphasized the importance of the students’ social circles and life choices, which could profoundly impact their futures.
The MEC also touched on the importance of strong relationships between teachers, parents, and learners, which create a supportive and nurturing environment essential for the growth and development of every child.
In a gesture of encouragement, MEC Makume distributed school backpacks and shoes to the students, symbolizing the government’s support in their educational journey.
Expressing satisfaction with the 2023 matriculation results, MEC Makume stated, “We are happy with the 2023 matric results and we are very proud of you. However, this year, we are aiming for a 100% pass rate both from matriculants and the grade seven class of 2024.”
The campaign also saw the MEC visiting Iketsetseng Comprehensive Secondary School in Sasolburg on January 23. As the itinerary progresses, there will be additional evaluations of school readiness and further motivation at Tsatsi Primary School—an alma mater of MEC Makume.
