MEC Thabo Meeko
In honor of women’s month, the Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) MEC Thabo Meeko will be hosting a dialogue with women in the green economy.
Taking place on Friday, 25 August 2023, at Maria Moroka in Thaba Nchu, this event will commence at 10am.
Drawing in approximately 100 business women from all five districts of the province, this occasion aims to address the overarching theme of the 2023 Women’s Month – *Accelerating socio-economic opportunities for women’s empowerment*.
MEC Meeko emphasized the fact that while significant progress has been made in advancing women’s rights in South Africa, there is still much work to be done. Gender inequality still persists, with a higher percentage of women facing poverty and unemployment compared to men.
The one-day dialogue will cover important topics, including the linkages between the environment and the economy, funding opportunities within the green economy, and success stories and best practices from small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMes).
Through this dialogue, women will be empowered to actively participate in the green economy. Progress made in women’s involvement in the green economy will be showcased, providing inspiration and motivation. Additionally, there will be a focus on sharing best practices and learning about accessing green funding opportunities.
MEC Meeko highlighted the importance of promoting learning opportunities to empower women in business. By encouraging women to initiate their own green projects, share expertise within the energy sector, and create jobs through green economic initiatives, a significant impact can be made.
Furthermore, this dialogue will establish linkages for ongoing economic participation, with a focus on improving the lives of women. The creation of eco-friendly human settlements will also play a crucial role in providing a dignified standard of living, combatting climate change, and promoting sustainable practices such as renewable energy and waste management.
MEC Meeko will set the tone for the dialogue and outline the government’s vision for the green economy. With the collaboration and determination of all participants, this event holds the potential to drive real change and empower women in the green economy.
