Easter Road Safety
By Thabo Mosia
MEC for the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport, Jabu Mbalula, is set to launch the 2025 Free State Easter Road Safety Campaign this Friday, 11 April 2025, along the N1 in Kroonstad, Free State Province.
According to MEC Communication Officer Mampone Mohloki, this initiative is a joint effort between the department, the Automobile Association (AA), the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), and MasterDrive. With Easter being a peak travel season in South Africa, the campaign aims to promote safer driving habits and cut down on road crashes and deaths, ensuring families can enjoy the holiday safely.
A Campaign to Save Lives This Easter
Easter is a time of celebration and travel in South Africa, but it’s also a period when roads become dangerously busy. The Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport is stepping up efforts to tackle this challenge head-on. Ms Mohloki explained that the 2025 campaign is all about educating drivers, passengers, and pedestrians on how to use the roads responsibly. “We want everyone to get home safely,” she said. “This launch is a big step towards reducing the crashes and fatalities we see every Easter.”
The N1 in Kroonstad, a key route for holidaymakers heading across the province and beyond, is the perfect spot for this launch. Partnering with trusted organisations like the AA, RTMC, and MasterDrive, the department is bringing a mix of hands-on activities and expert advice to the table. It’s not just talk – it’s about giving road users real tools to stay safe.
What to Expect at the Launch
The launch event promises to be both informative and engaging. Travellers passing through Kroonstad on Friday can look forward to a range of activities designed to highlight road safety. Here’s what’s planned:
- Passenger Safety Simulator: This interactive tool lets you experience firsthand why safe driving matters. It’s a wake-up call for anyone who thinks road rules are optional.
- Tyre and Vehicle Safety Checks: Before hitting the road, drivers can get their tyres and vehicles checked for free. A roadworthy car can mean the difference between a safe trip and a tragedy.
- Engagements with Road Safety Experts: Experts will be on hand to share tips and answer questions. Whether you’re a new driver or a seasoned traveller, there’s something to learn.
These activities aren’t just for show – they’re practical steps to help people avoid the dangers that spike during Easter. With families travelling to visit loved ones or attend church gatherings, the stakes are high, and the department wants every journey to end with a safe arrival.
Key Safety Tips for Easter Travel
The campaign isn’t stopping at the launch event. It’s a call to action for everyone on the road. With unpredictable weather often adding to the risks this time of year, the department and its partners are urging drivers to stay sharp and considerate. Here are some key tips they’re pushing:
- Making Time for Regular Breaks: Tiredness kills. Take a break every 200 kilometers or two hours to stay fresh and alert.
- Obey Speed Limits: Speeding is behind too many crashes. Stick to the limit – it’s there for a reason.
- Avoiding Distractions: Put the phone down and keep your eyes on the road. A split-second distraction can change everything.
- Ensuring Vehicle Roadworthiness: Check your car before you leave. Bald tyres or faulty brakes could spell disaster.
These simple steps can make a huge difference. The message is clear: safety starts with you, whether you’re behind the wheel or in the passenger seat.
GotHomeSafe: Share Your Story
One of the campaign’s standout features is its push for community involvement. Travellers are encouraged to share their safe arrival stories using the hashtag #GotHomeSafe. “It’s a way to let your loved ones know you’re okay and inspire others to travel responsibly,” Ms Mohloki said. By posting on social media, you’re not just celebrating your journey – you’re helping spread the word about roadQuestion safety.
