The Free State Government is grappling with a tragic wave of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide, prompting urgent calls for action. MEC for Community Safety Jabu Mbalula has strongly condemned the recent killings of women in the province, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive measures to combat this crisis.

On Friday, 19 July 2024, MEC Jabu Mbalula, accompanied by MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture & Recreation Zanele Sifuba, visited the family of Ms. Motlalepule Patricia Moramotse in Masilonyana (Theunissen). Ms. Moramotse was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, a tragic event that has left the community in shock and mourning.

In a deeply distressing turn of events, the Free State government awoke this morning to the heart-wrenching news that Disebo Mosupa’s body had been discovered buried in a shallow grave. This grim discovery came just one day after the government delegation had visited her family.

MEC Mbalula praised the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement agencies for their relentless efforts in locating the place where Disebo Mosupa was buried. “This behavior is extremely worrisome as it targets the most vulnerable group. We cannot continue like this. We must bring a stop to this pandemic,” said Mbalula, strongly condemning the inhuman behaviour of those who are supposed to protect women.

The Free State Government, under the leadership of Premier MaQueen Letshoha-Mathae, is planning to host an Anti-Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Femicide Summit later this year. This summit aims to develop effective strategies to combat this monstrous war against women and children.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and to the many families in the province affected by these senseless killings. Uvelwano lwam olunzulu nawekunye nosapho lwakho (my deepest sympathy with you and your family). Be comforted,” expressed MEC Mbalula.

Captain Stephen Thakeng, the Free State Police spokesperson, reported that Disebo Portia Mosupa (30), who was reported missing at Welkom Police Station on 15 July 2024, was found buried at Thabo Cemetery in Welkom. Following the report of her disappearance, a team of police investigators, community members, and family members conducted a thorough search, which led to the discovery of her body in Thabong Cemeteries. The body, buried in a used grave, was exhumed this morning by forensic investigators.

“One suspect, aged 37, has been arrested for murder, and investigations are continuing. Anyone with information that can lead to more arrests can contact Detective Sergeant Zuzeka Kobuwe of Welkom Detective Services at 078 683 9201 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Alternatively, an anonymous tip can be sent via the MySAPS App,” stated Captain Thakeng.

In an earlier statement issued on 16 July 2024, Captain Thakeng mentioned that the Free State Police had launched a search for Disebo Portia Mosupa after her father found her house ransacked and she was nowhere to be found. The community’s collaborative effort played a crucial role in locating her.

The Free State Social Development MEC, Mathabo Leeto, also condemned the brutal killing of Disebo Mosupa, emphasising the need for collective action to protect women and children in the province.
