Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has expressed his deep sadness over the deaths of a Hyde Park Secondary School educator and a Jeppe High School for Boys Grade 11 learner.

The Hyde Park tragedy occurred when a Grade 12 educator was discovered dead on the school’s sports grounds. “According to information at our disposal, the educator was allegedly found hanging in the sports grounds of the school on Wednesday morning. Paramedics certified him dead on arrival,” relayed department spokesperson Steve Mabona. Police have initiated an investigation to unravel the details of the event, which has left the school community reeling from the shock.

Further distress hit the province as a Jeppe High learner lost his life unexpectedly on Tuesday, after participating in a rugby match against Hoërskool Die Anker in Brakpan. “It is alleged that the learner was not feeling well after the said match. Paramedics on site tried to stabilise him and contacted an ambulance for further medical assistance. Unfortunately, the learner succumbed shortly after the ambulance arrived,” Mabona explained.

In the wake of these heartrending occurrences, MEC Matome announced that a Psycho-Social Support Unit has been activated and sent to both educational institutions, offering trauma counselling and support to affected students, staff, and families. He further acknowledged the contributions of the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), which is providing additional services to those at the schools.

The community’s grief is palpable, as conveyed by MEC Chiloane: “We are deeply disheartened by these tragic incidents and wish to extend our most sincerest condolences to the families of the departed, as well as their respective school communities.”

Authorities continue to urge anyone who may need support during this difficult time to reach out and make use of the resources available, such as those provided by SADAG. The education department affirms its commitment to the welfare of its students and educators, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness and support within the school system.
