Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, has voiced his concern following a fire that broke out at Lancea Vale Secondary School in Eldorado Park, causing significant damage to several classrooms.

On Tuesday, 20 August 2024, a fire incident at Lancea Vale Secondary School resulted in extensive damage to three classrooms located in the Grade 8 and Grade 9 block. Preliminary reports suggest that the fire began in Room 81, situated on the first floor of Block C. The fire quickly spread, gutting the three classrooms entirely and raising concerns about the structural safety of the affected building.

Firefighters responded swiftly to the scene, and an assessment is underway to determine the full extent of the damage. This assessment will guide the decision-making process on whether it is safe to continue with teaching and learning in the damaged block.

The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire. This incident comes shortly after a separate event at the same school last week, where a learner was stabbed by another student. These incidents have raised alarm about the safety and security of learners at Lancea Vale Secondary School.

MEC Chiloane expressed his concern over these recent events, stating, “It is indeed concerning that last week Wednesday there was a stabbing incident of a learner by another learner at the same school. We will not tolerate violence or gangsterism perpetuated in and around our schools. In the same breath, we are closely monitoring the situation, and we are certain that learning and teaching will resume accordingly at the school.”
